This past month I have had the honor of spending all my time working on a production of Shakespeare's HAMLET at the CAPITAL REPERTORY THEATRE in Albany, New York. I play the role of MARCELLUS in this great tragedy. This has been an enormous experience for me, and has strengthened my stride in the direction I want my career to go. Being my first professional theater production, I have been exposed to what its like to be truly working my craft. Everything from the set design and music, to the costumes and selection of the script has made this show truly amazing. Not to mention the fantastic actors I have the pleasure of working with. Composed of a mixture of Equity actors from NYC and Non-Union local actors, its a collaboration that really sparks this tragic filled story. Many of the Equity actors have worked in film and been on broadway, so that adds an element of nervousness to my experience that will only help improve my abilities, as I'm exposed to an idea of what my future could hold.
The play is directed by the great KEVIN MCGUIRE of Broadway fame, and he's vision of this take on Hamlet is stunning. Setting the events in the 1920's brings a new breath of life to it, as well as filling his desire for a dark and broody set. Though technically bare, the stage comes to life with the movement of two large monuments that spin and dance around the stage between scenes, making the set itself a character in the plot of this tale.
Its a Shakespeare for the ages type of thing. The show is action packed and fast paced, delivering the classic tale with some new surprises, such as a beautifully composed take on Ophelia's song, imagined by the wonderful MICHAEL ROTH, and brought to life by the gorgeous voice of VANESSA STERLING. Its definitely a show that will leave your memories haunted. Opening night was a blast and a true success, with many more nights following. The production runs until May 10th, so there's still a chance to see it! Following the CAPITAL REPERTORY'S Facebook page will give you updates, interviews, and behind the scenes footage of the production, so make sure to do so to get the fullest out of this piece!
